A stone stable, 80 foot tall water tower and nine greenhouses were built on the 5,000 acre estate. In 1942, sparks from one of the fireplaces ignited the roof and the entire castle was gutted. Only the outside stone walls remain. The state of Missouri purchased the estate in 1978 and opened it to the public.
